Juan, 2018. 4’ x 4’

Acrylic, screenprint, and ink on brown paper bags. This painting repeats and obscures an image of my grandfather Juan, his parents, and siblings in Mexico City prior to their migration into the U.S. The obscurity within the photograph represents the obscurity in my knowledge of my grandfathers childhood. The somberness in the treatment of paint and moments of violence in the actions of scraping, cutting, and stabbing are reflective of my frustration upon the death of this estranged grandparent.
